So, with the GTI being the Official Car of Oppo, leave it to me to do Oppo-site

Hi Oppo - it’s been a minute, and for that I apologize. Life sometimes gets in the way.

Anyhow, some may recall that last February, I bought a brand new GTI S and got it for a steal. Interestingly, this is about the time Oppo fell in love with the GTI.

In November, I traded my LEAF for a two door Cooper S for my daughter:

Well, for whatever r eason,I fell in love with the Cooper. So in December, I traded the GTI for a manual Mini Cooper S 4 door. While I loved the GTI, the DSG was boring. I know the Cooper is slower, etc., etc., but it is an absolute blast to drive and is far better equipped that the base GTI I had. This particular Cooper S is a 2015, but it pretty much has every option including the adaptive suspension, heads up display, panoramic sunroof, self-parking, etc. I do miss Android Auto, but that’s really the only thing. What I don’t miss is the turbo lag. This little guy has the two-liter BMW twin turbo and there is zero lag.

Neat! Sweet ride!

The love for the GTI has dwindled a bit recently ever since they inherited the ST curse.

2 Minis, a 944, and a fancy Traverse -- someone likes to live dangerously

Thanks. Been pretty happy with it. A manual GTI might have done just as well as it was kind of an impulse buy. I do think the build quality is slightly better on the Mini.

Wow, I feel like the GTI boom was even shorter than the ST boom. Granted, the GTI boom ended up being a bit more literal, wheras the ST one  seemed to be more of a crash.

...gti is the “ official” car? I don’t recall the Miata ever being dethroned, nor brown manual diesel wagons (bonus points for Volvo)

Mmm, maybe it depends on the mileage or they worked out some issues. My 09 clubman with 100k is built like a GM whereas my brothers 2012 G olf R is closer to an old Lexus

While I struggle with wanting a GTI or Alltrack due to VW reliability, I would never touch a Mini. In all perfect Oppo car. Looks properly fun and spunky.

I did the opposite. I had a 05 Cooper s with 6 speed, traded that for a 2011 gti with dsg. Loved the mini to death, could never more than like the GTI. Traded that for a Civic when the repair bills started piling up, and have a Miata on the side. The Miata was the first car to make me stop missing the mini. Happy motoring!

I was going to say when I bought my 2012 turbo beetle a similar mileage and age Cooper s had bad seat wear, and felt 50% older. I still loved that cooper and wish I could make the switch...

Very nice. Just a heads up, the B48 in that puppy has  a single turbo. It’s a twinscroll snail, hence the lack of lag.

I joined Oppo after I got my GTI. I feel like Oppo is more fond of GTIs than the Jalops, who seem “fickle”, unless it’s Miata or brown diesel wagon.

I currently own a GTI and a MINI, both manual, 2013 and about 80k miles. Interior of the GTI is definitely quieter. VW h as had far more problems though - Clutch, Turbo, Intake manifold, front wheel bearings.

I was at the local MINI dealer to get something recently. There was a stunning orange  manual JCW in the showroom. Hnnnnngggg, but it was FORTY TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS. Good thing I already have a gorgeous orange MCS (which was itself something of an impulse buy).

The new Minis are more BMW. The Golf R is actually built in Germany, whereas the GTIs are assembled in Mexico.

I guess I should have been clearer. I’ve heard it described both ways. It’s not the old style “twin” turbo but a sequential turbo.

It’s not a sequential turbo either. It’s a single, twinscroll turbo. Acts like sequential turbos but with only one turbo. BMW calls both their sequential and single turbo cars “twin power” which  confuses everyone.

That’s more appealing than any production VW made in the last 30 years.
